Biography

Justin Burwinkel is a twenty year old photographer and a lifelong resident of the Cincinnati area.  In 2007 Burwinkel graduated from Archbishop McNicholas High School and has since pursued his artistic ambitions as an up and coming regular on the local art show circuit. In addition to this particularly demanding pursuit, Burwinkel is currently enrolled in the College of Allied Health Sciences at the University of Cincinnati.

While some have overlooked the relationship Photography has to his academic aspirations in the study of Audiology and Speech-Language, Burwinkel assures that he has found the two sciences to parallel often in their nature. “Much of what I have been learning about the physics of sound has helped me to better understand light, and ultimately how best to capture it,” Burwinkel said confidently.

Those familiar with Burwinkel's dynamic pieces understand: it is how this young professional “capture[s]” light that really separates his pieces from the rest of his contemporaries. Burwinkel boasts, “There are four methods in particular that I use to get more than just 'a snapshot' when out in the field shooting. All of which require that I make more than just one 'click' of the shutter.” Burwinkel notes that discussions of his unconventional techniques have comprised much of his dialogue with show-goers in and have even landed him guest speaking engagements among local photography groups.  “People tell me my work is different. It just doesn't look like anything they have seen before. I’m often times confused for a painter. A painter! A short talk with some of my previous art teachers and you would understand how funny the assertion sounds to me,” Burwinkel added

Burwinkel’s work has earned him acceptance into the most competitive shows in Cincinnati including Summerfair and the Hyde Park Square Art Show.  In the 2009 Wyoming Art Show his piece “Remembered Sundays with the Chief” was chosen to be the Wyoming Business Association Award winner.  In 2008 his pieces earned Second Place overall in 2-D Media.  Other achievements include inclusion in the presentation of “The House Ruth Lyons Built,” honorable mention status in the 2007 Cincinnati Art Association’s Overture Awards and several publishings.
